Bubis and Ivarsson Finish at Region V Tourname
Tulsa, Okla. – Senior Aleksey Bubis finished with the best showing of his career at an ITA event during the ITA Omni Hotels Region V Tournament in Tulsa, Okla., on Monday. Bubis faced a tough opponent in the No. 97 ranked Alejandro Tejerina of Tulsa.

Bubis teamed with sophomore Kristofer Ivarsson in the doubles championship where they player Tulsa’s Ryan Livesay and Dustin Taylor.

Bubis and Tejerina played a two set match that found Tejerina getting on top and not allowing Bubis to get back in the match. Tejerina won, 6-3, 6-4, and clinched the Region V singles championship. Both players qualified for the Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships hosted by Southern Methodist University at Brookhaven Country Club, Dallas, Texas, on Nov. 7-10.

“The championship was a great match,” Arkansas head coach Robert Cox said. “Both of them played very well. It was a very competitive match and Tejerina is a very solid player. Bubis didn’t play as well as he did in the previous days’ competitions and Tejerina didn’t make enough mistakes to let Bubis back in the match.

“I’m proud of Aleksey, a senior, who has been a warrior for this Razorback team,” Cox said. “He’s been here a while and its good that he’s finally getting some recognition for his singles play.”

In the doubles match up, the Hogs were again ousted by Tulsa, bringing the Bubis-Ivarsson unbeaten streak to an end. Taylor and Livesay defeated the Arkansas duo 6-4.

“It was a great tournament that Kristofer and Aleksey had this week,” Cox said. “Coupled with what they did earlier this semester, they’ve had a really good fall. I’m really proud of them. They just didn’t have enough for the two guys from Tulsa. They just outplayed us in the finals.”

The next collegiate competition for the Razorbacks is on Nov. 2 when they travel back to Tulsa to try and qualify the team for the USTA/ITA Men’s National Team Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Kentucky at the Louisville Tennis Club to be held February 20-23, 2003.
