Cantero named Freshman of the Week

FAYETTEVILLE – For his performance in his first race in Cardinal and White, University of Arkansas harrier Bryan Cantero has been selected the Southeastern Conference Freshman Runner of the Week, as announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon.

Making his Razorback debut, Cantero clocked an 8K time of 24:13 at the Stanford Invitational and posted a 17th-place finish. He crossed as Arkansas’ sixth finisher and rounded out the team’s lineup of six top-20 performers. The Aoste, France, native notched the top freshman result in a race of 231 participants.

Paced by three top-10 finishes, the Razorbacks earned a second-placed finish at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. Solomon Haile was Arkansas’ top finisher at sixth place as the team totaled 43 points, behind host and top-ranked Stanford and ahead of No. 4 Northern Arizona. With Cantero and Haile, the Razorbacks six top-20 lineup included Dorian Ulrey (7th overall), Lane Boyer (10th), Eric Fernandez (11th) and Michael Chinchar (12th).

In the latest release of the USTFCCCA national poll, the Razorbacks vaulted seven spots to the No. 8 position following their effort at Stanford. Arkansas also maintained its top spot in the South Central Region rankings. The Razorbacks return to action Oct. 16 with the Chile Pepper Festival at Agri Park in Fayetteville.
