TULSA, Okla. — Despite a loss to Texas State on Saturday evening, the University of Arkansas volleyball team captured the tournament title at this weekend’s Golden Hurricane Classic. The Razorbacks finished the event with a 2-1 weekend record with wins over Northern Colorado and host Tulsa. All-tournament selections will be announced following the Tulsa-Northern Colorado match, the final contest of the Classic. Overall, Arkansas is now 6-3 through its first nine matches of the season. Arkansas ended its weekend with a three-set loss (25-21, 25-18, 25-22) to Texas State. Junior Meredith Hays continued to pace the Razorback offense with a match-high 17 kills while adding three digs. The junior transfer finished the three-match weekend with 50 total kills including a 21-kill effort in the opener against Tulsa. She also posted a double-double against the Golden Hurricane, her second of the season. The team’s defense Saturday night was anchored at the net by a career-best performance from sophomore Summer Morgan who registered 10 total blocks against the Bobcats, tied for the highest figure by an SEC player this season. The Springdale, Ark., native entered the weekend with a career high of six total blocks. Arkansas out-blocked Texas State, 16.0-10.0. Senior libero Emily Helm led the team and tied for the match high with nine digs. Arkansas’ match against Texas State was its second of the day, having defeated Northern Colorado in straight sets (25-13, 25-20, 28-26) Saturday morning. The Razorbacks posted a season-high .310 hitting percentage and had five players with at least five kills against the Bears. Arkansas opened the Golden Hurricane Classic on Friday night with a four-set victory over host Tulsa, rallying from a set down in the match. The Razorbacks now return to Fayetteville for their final week of non-conference competition. Arkansas will host the Razorback Invitational on Sept. 20-21, welcoming Kansas State, Saint Louis and South Alabama to Barnhill Arena.
