Dahl Four Strokes Off the Lead After the First

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Junior Andrew Dahl shot a one-over 71 and is only four strokes off the individual lead after the opening round of the 2003 Southeastern Conference Golf Championships at the Sea Island Golf Club on Friday.
Dahl is tied for eighth in the competition in the hunt for his third individual title this season. He already has taken top individual honors at the Stonebridge Invitational and the Border Olympics this season.
Dahl is in a pack chasing Georgia’s Kevin Kisner and Florida’s Brett Stegmaier. Kisner’s three-under 67 helped Georgia take the team overall lead at 288 (+8). Only four of the 60 players broke par in their round on Friday.
“Andrew played a very solid round,” Arkansas head coach Mike Ketcham said. “As usual, he played with limited mistakes. If you do that on this golf course, you can make a run. He has put himself in position to have another successful tournament.”
The Razorbacks carded a team total of 299 (+19) on the par 70 course and sit in seventh place after the first round. Only 11 strokes separate the top seven teams after Friday.
“We need to come out and regroup tomorrow,” Ketcham said. “This is a tough golf course and you have to focus on every shot. There is still time to make a run, but we need to post a better score on Saturday.”
Wing and freshman Darren Holder are tied for 22nd place after posting a 75. Junior Seth Murphy is tied for 39th after shooting a first-round 78. Freshman Paul Bradshaw rounded out the Hogs’ team scoring with an 80.
Friday’s first round was plagued by thunderstorms that halted play at 3:05 p.m. local time. Arkansas nearly completed its round before the inclement weather forced golfers inside for two hours and 35 minutes. Three of the Hogs’ five competitors finished before play was suspended. Junior Adam Wing was on the 18th hole when the stoppage occurred while Dahl was on the green at the 17th hole.
Second round action is slated for Saturday while the final round is set for Sunday.
