Darren McFadden Earns SEC Freshman of the Week for Second Week in a Row

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas freshman Darren McFadden has been named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week for the second consecutive week it was announced by the league office on Monday.

McFadden rushed for a career-high 190 yards and two touchdowns on 31 carries against No. 4 Georgia. He broke the UA freshman single-game rushing mark previously held by Darryl Bowles (169) against Texas A&M in 1979. His 190-yard total also ranked as the 12th-best rushing performance by any Razorback in school history. McFadden earned 190 of Arkansas’ 216 rushing yards against the Bulldogs. Georgia entered the game allowing only an average of 91.2 yards rushing in its first six games.

“Darren had another outstanding game against one of the best teams in the nation,” Arkansas head coach Houston Nutt said. “He continues to get better and better every week. He hits the line of scrimmage at full speed and uses his blocking well. If he continues in the same direction, he has the potential to have a special career as a Razorback.”

McFadden tied his career long with a 70-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. He also scored from one yard out in the fourth quarter. He eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark for the third-consecutive week becoming the first UA freshman to record three 100-yard rushing games in a season. He became the first Razorback to tally three-consecutive 100-yard rushing outings since Cedric Cobbs accomplished the feat in 2003.

With his performance against Georgia, McFadden also broke Cobbs’ UA freshman single- season rushing record (668) set in 1999. Through seven games, McFadden leads the Razorbacks with 682 yards and eight touchdowns on 86 attempts. His 97.4 yards-per-game average ranks fourth in the SEC and 28th in the nation. He leads the SEC with eight touchdowns.

McFadden earned 21 runs of three yards or more against Georgia including 11 runs of five or more yards and four runs of 10 or more yards. He also returned a kickoff 15 yards against the Bulldogs. He earned a total of 205 all-purpose yards.

McFadden’s freshman award is the third won by a Razorback this season. McFadden earned the honor last week after rushing for 108 yards and two touchdowns against No. 21 Auburn. Fellow freshman Felix Jones garnered the inaugural honor this season for his 137-yard rushing performance against Missouri State in the season opener.
