Eibner named player of the week

ATHENS, Ga. – Sophomore Brett Eibner was named the Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week and one of five Louisville Slugger National Players of the Week it was announced on Monday afternoon.

Eibner tossed a complete game one-hitter against the No. 1 ranked Georgia Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon at Foley Field in Athens, Ga. In two starts this week Eibner was 1-0 with a 1.50 earned run average over 12 innings, but his signature appearance came on Sunday afternoon.

The complete game shutout was the first by a Razorback since MLB first-round draft pick Nick Schmidt tossed one against Alabama on March 23, 2007 and the one-hitter was the first by a Razorback in more than 12 years (Richie Nye vs. S. Carolina, March 29, 1996). Facing one of the nation’s most potent offenses, Eibner shut out the Bulldogs for the first time in more than two years and kept Georgia to just one hit for the first time in 15. His 12-strikeout performance was a career best and was the highest total by a Razorback pitcher since Jess Todd fanned 17 South Carolina batters during the 2007 SEC Tournament.

With Eibner on the mound, Arkansas kept a Southeastern Conference opponent scoreless on the road for the first time since the 1994 season, a span of 217 consecutive games.

The SEC honor for Eibner is the first of his career and he becomes the third Razorback to take a league award. Chase Leavitt was named SEC Player of the Week on March 9 and Collin Kuhn took SEC Freshman of the Week honors on March 16. The Louisville Slugger accolade is also a first for Eibner as he becomes the first Razorback since Aaron Murphree last year to be recognized.
