FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Joey Vandever and Luke Miller each hit solo home runs as Evansville overcame four errors for a 4-1 win over Arkansas Tuesday in the first game of a two-game series at Baum Stadium. The victory was the Purple Aces’ (6-3) second in a row over the Razorbacks (9-6), who lost for the fourth time in their last five games. Evansville starter Wes Davis (1-1) evened his record and held the Hogs to five hits in 6 2/3 innings. Willie Glen recorded the final five outs for his fourth save of the season. Razorback starter Jared Manatt (0-1) took the loss after giving up all four of the Purple Aces’ runs on five hits in three innings. Vandever’s home run on an 0-2 pitch to lead off the game and Miller’s solo homer in the second proved to be all Evansville would need. Wes Carroll’s RBI double and Any Rohleder’s infield single plated two runs in the second inning to give the Purple Aces a 4-0 lead. Arkansas’ Jon Murphy and Jon Richmond combined for six innings of scoreless, one-hit relief, but UA stranded nine baserunners and was held scoreless until the eighth inning when Brian Kirby scored from third on a bunt single by Cody Clark. The series concludes Wednesday at 4 p.m. CT.
