First day totals seven wins for Hogs at Rice

First day totals seven wins for Hogs at Rice

HOUSTON, Texas – The University of Arkansas men’s tennis team opened the Rice Invitational with seven wins on Friday afternoon in Houston, Texas. Two wins came in doubles play and junior Hall Fess capped a five win singles round with a strong three set win, 5-7, 7-5, 7-5, over Adam Bernstein of Tulane. Junior Gregoire Lehmann, sophomore Manfred Jeske and freshmen Victor Hoang and Jovan Parlic were the other winners for the Hogs in singles.

“We played a lot of matches today,” Arkansas head coach Robert Cox said. “It wasn’t a bad opening day for us. For some of these guys, it has ben a while since they’ve been on a competitive court. They looked a little rusty, but I was glad they came through. I was real proud of Hall Fess, being down a set early and coming back to win it in three was great.”

The win for Fess was his second of the young fall season with his last coming at the RazorRacket Invitational a week ago. Singles play started with a quick win from Jeske over Tulane’s Ethan Frenkel and later a three-set win from Lehmann, who after being taken to a third set by Rodrigo Rappaccioli of Tulane, ended up putting the match to bed with an easy 6-0 third set win. The win for Lehmann was his first of the year.

The remaining two wins came from Parlic and Hoang, who were making their Razorback debuts on Friday. Parlic was the other quick winner on the day as he defeated Coby Kramer-Golinkoff of Tulane, 6-0, 6-1. Hoang had a tougher match on his hands with Rice’s Isamu Tachibana. After losing the first set, 3-6, Hoang grinded out two straight set wins, 7-5, 6-4, to earn his first Hog victory.

“That’s refreshing to have two freshmen step out on the court and play like that,” Cox said. “they looked like they owned the court. I’m real proud of them. They came out and played some great doubles. They were nervous, but they got through it. We really liked what we saw from Jovan and Victor.”

Earlier in the day in doubles, Parlic and Hoang were, again, the big winners, earning an 8-6 win over Ethan Frenkel and Adam Bernstein of Tulane. The only other win for the Razorbacks came from Lehmann and junior Mike Ward, who defeated their SEC counterparts, Chris Simpson and Mark Bowtell of LSU, 9-7, for their first doubles win of the season. As a team, the Razorbacks finished the day 2-2 in doubles and 5-3 in singles.

The team will be back on the courts on Saturday morning with the first serve for doubles set for 10 a.m. Singles will follow after doubles has concluded. A full recap and results will be available online after all the matches have gone final.
