FAYETTEVILLE – Arkansas’ nationally-ranked gymnastics team didn’t waste any time getting to work as the Razorbacks had an intrasquad meet on Sept. 22, the first day of official team workouts.
The 13 Razorbacks, who tied for ninth in the nation in 2011, performed on all four events – vault, bars, beam and floor.
A video with highlights and interviews is available at the link below.
The video includes footage of junior All-American Amy Borsellino, junior All-American Kelci Lewis, junior Jordan Salsberg, sophomore All-American Katherine Grable, sophomore Scarlett Williams and freshman Stephani Canizaro on vault.
"The six vaults we did were much bigger than last year and more dynamic," co-head coach Mark Cook said. "Our summer conditioning has really paid off as far as us getting stronger and more powerful. We’re really pleased. All six vaults were 10.0 and we did really well."
The video also includes footage of the Razorbacks on bars, including Borsellino, Lewis, Salsberg, Grable, Canizaro, senior Genny Salvatore, senior Mariah Howdeshell, sophomore Shelby Salmon, sophomore Bailee Zumwalde and freshman Sammy Kolbas.
"We did really well," Mark Cook said. "We incorporated some changes and combinations from our routines last season, and we improved the dismount for some. We have a lot of depth. We have more kids on bars and they all did 10.0 routines. It’s exciting to see their progress."
On beam, video highlights include Borsellino, Lewis, Canizaro, Salsberg and Grable.
"After today, I’m pleased with the changes we made in their composition," co-head coach René Cook said. "I think we’re set on what skills we’re doing and in what order. That’s a good place to be. Some years, we’re still trying to figure that out. This allows us to move forward. From now on, we’ll focus on execution and drill work, and getting the girls confident and prepared to know they are going to make their skill so they can start showing them off a little better."
First-year assistant and former Razorback Sam Cortez is working with the Razorbacks on their floor routines. The video includes highlights of Lewis, Grable, Canizaro, Salsberg, Borsellino, Zumwalde, Williams and senior All-American Jaime Pisani.
"I’m really happy with where we are right now," Cortez said. "I think it’s a great starting point for the season. I’m excited to continue to build from here on out. There’s always room for improvement and things we can take away from here today to work on and focus on a little more, but as a whole and overall, I’m really proud of today."
