FAYETTEVILLE – Former Razorback standout Janeliss Torres-Lopez has been named the 2014 Rookie of the Year by the Puerto Rico National Volleyball Federation as a member of Leonas de Ponce. She is also playing alongside former teammate and Razorback All-American Raymariely Santos.
Torres-Lopez has helped Ponce earn a spot in the semifinals of the Puerto Rico Superior League playoffs. In the best-four-of-seven format, Ponce owns a 2-0 series lead over Mayaguez. Torres-Lopez had six kills, three blocks and three digs in Monday’s game two. She led all players with seven blocks in the series opener to go along with five kills. Game three will be played Wednesday.
Overall, three former Razorbacks are playing in the LVSF semifinals. In addition to Santos and Torres-Lopez, former setter Ashley Vazquez plays for Criollas de Caguas who also owns a 2-0 lead over Gigantes de Carolina.
During her career at Arkansas, Torres-Lopez totaled 549 kills, 327 total blocks and 760.5 points. She is the Razorbacks’ career leader during rally scoring (2008-pres.) in total blocks and is third in that time in hitting percentage. During her career, she earned one SEC Defensive Player of the Week honor and established career bests of 22 kills and 11 total blocks.
In her senior season, Torres-Lopez posted a career-best .343 hitting percentage to go along with 1.79 kills per set. She helped the Razorbacks to a 2012 NCAA Tournament bid, breaking the program’s six-year postseason absence.
The Razorbacks continue their spring schedule Thursday with a 7 p.m. (CT) matchup against Missouri State at Barnhill Arena. The three-match spring concludes Saturday with the team’s Red-White Match at 11 a.m. during RazorFest before the football team’s Spring Game.
