Fortson named freshman All-American

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. –- Arkansas point guard Courtney Fortson has been named a freshman All-American by CollegeHoops.net.

Fortson, the top freshman playmaker in the country (No. 18 nationally) with 5.9 assists per game, has been named to CollegeHoops.net’s third team.

The first team includes Memphis’ Tyreke Evans, Oklahoma’s Willie Warren, Washington’s Isaiah Thomas, Wake Forest’s Al-Farouq Aminu and Georgetown’s Greg Monroe. The second team is Liberty’s Seth Curry, Virginia’s Sylven Landesberg, Southern California’s DeMar DeRozan, Nevada’s Luke Babbitt and Louisville’s Samardo Samuels.

Fortson is joined on the third team by Butler’s Gordon Hayward, North Carolina’s Ed Davis, Ole Miss’ Terrico White and West Virginia’s Devin Ebanks. The fourth team is Rutgers’ Mike Rosario, Ohio State’s William Buford and B.J. Mullens, Iowa’s Matt Gatens and Alabama’s JaMychal Green.

Fortson was second in the SEC in assists, 13th in scoring (14.8), 24th in rebounding (5.5) and sixth in minutes played (32.8). He also led the team with 1.1 steals per game.

The 5-11, 180-pounder from Montgomery, Ala., led the team in assists 27 times, in scoring eight times and in rebounding three times. He scored in double figures a team-high 25 times, had five 20-point games and three double-figure rebounding games.

His triple-double of 20 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists against North Carolina Central on Dec. 10 was just the second in school history and the first since Alvin Robertson in 1984.

Named to the SEC’s All-Freshman team, he earned SEC Player of the Week honors once and Freshman of the Week honors once.

Fortson is the third Razorback to earn freshman All-America honors in the last six years. Ronnie Brewer made the Rivals second team and College Basketball News’ third team in 2004, and Patrick Beverley was a first-team selection of CollegeInsider.com, a second-team pick of Basketball Times, and a third-team choice of Rivals and CollegeHoops.net in 2007.
