AUSTIN, Texas – Sophomore Chelsea Franklin was the first Razorbacks to compete in the 2011 NCAA Championships in the 500 freestyle event with a 38th-place finish in Austin, Texas on Thursday.
Franklin, who currently holds the Arkansas record in the 500 free, finished with a time of 4:45.58 in the preliminary race.
"Chelsea had a very good morning swim in the 500 free," Arkansas coach Jeff Poppell said. "Her time, although not her best, was within a second of her morning preliminary time at the conference meet. I thought it was a solid start for her first NCAA competition."
Franklin finished 12 in the preliminary swim at the Southeastern Conference Championships and finished 11th in the event overall.
Allison Schmitt of Georgia finished first in the prelims on Thursday morning and came back to take the NCAA title with a time of 4:34.20.
The Razorbacks continue at the NCAA Championships tomorrow with the 400 IM for Jamie Marks and the 200 free for Franklin.
