FAYETTEVILLE — For his work on the University of Arkansas campus and within the Northwest Arkansas community, Nathanael Franks has earned a spot on the 2013 SEC Community Service Team for cross country and track and field. Franks is a redshirt sophomore multi-event competitor for the No. 5 University of Arkansas men’s track and field team. Franks serves as a core leader of the International Culture Team, an on-campus outreach effort to international students and is involved in the Recess organization which offers one-on-one mentoring of children with disabilities in Northwest Arkansas. He has volunteered at Hispanic Heritage Festival, Indian Independence Day and Chinese Moon Festival events. Franks has also taken part in Arkansas’ Make a Difference Day. The Damascus, Ore., native is the recipient of the 2013 Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup. Franks is a founding father of the Fayetteville chapter of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. In the classroom, he completed his undergraduate studies in 2.5 years with degrees in chemistry and physics and qualified as a Fulbright Senior Scholar with a 3.96 cumulative grade-point average. Franks added an SEC title to his credit as the 400-meter leg of the Razorbacks’ winning distance-medley relay at the SEC Indoor Championships in February. Arkansas’ championship season begins Thursday with the SEC Outdoor Championships. The conference meet is scheduled for competition May 9-12 at Audrey J. Walton Stadium in Columbia, Mo. The Razorbacks are the two-time defending outdoor champions and have won 17 SEC outdoor titles in the program’s history. Dating back to the 2011 outdoor meet, Arkansas has won six consecutive SEC competitions. The 2013 SEC Championships will be streamed live by ESPN3 on Saturday, May 11 from 3:40-6:45 p.m. (CT), and Sunday, May 12 from 2:50-6:45 p.m. Competition outside of the ESPN3 coverage will be available on MUTigers.com.
