Fulop Jackson Pace Lady'Backs in SEC Opener

FAYETTEVILLE- Junior Mariann Fulop and freshman Summer Jackson led the University of Arkansas swimming and diving team against Kentucky in the Southeastern Conference opener, Saturday, Dec. 3, inside the Arkansas Natatorium.

The Lady Razorbacks fell to the Wildcats on Senior Day, 150-120. Fulop and Jackson led Arkansas with victories in the 100 back and 50 free, respectively. Fulop finished with a near season best time. The pair also took second-place finishes; Fulop in the 200 back and Jackson in the 100 free.

Arkansas swimming head coach Anne Goodman James said she was proud of her team’s performance despite the challenging Wildcats lineup.

“We raced with them really well,” she said. “We pulled out some great wins. It was exciting to see Elizabeth Engs race so well in the 200 breast and 200 IM.”

Sophomore Brieanne Kushner recorded a season-best mark on the three-meter spring board while taking first-place honors. Sophomore Jamie Hyslop followed with a fourth place finish.

In the 200 breaststroke, freshman Elizabeth Engs earned second-place honors while nearly recording a season best time. One of the most competitive races of the meet was the 100 breast where freshman Jesika Heidloff took third.

In addition to the conference opener, the Lady’Backs honored senior Angela Kora in her final home meet of her collegiate career.

“It’s always tough to lose seniors,” Goodman James said. “Angela’s meant a lot to this program. We will miss her leadership in the pool and the classroom.”
