Garner Wins Bars Title Against No. 2 LSU

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Hailey Garner tied for first place on uneven bars with a career-best score of 9.900 for the team’s first individual title in the event this season. Arkansas (2-4, 2-3 SEC) scored a season best on vault and floor exercise to start and end the meet for its second-highest score of the season (196.275).

LSU (6-0, 5-0 SEC) scored a 49.225 or higher in all four events, including a 49.550 on floor exercise and a 49.525 on balance beam, for the 197.700-196.275 win on Friday night in Barnhill Arena.

Arkansas posted a season-best 49.000 on vault to open the meet, led by Sydney McGlone and Braie Speed with scores of 9.850 and 9.825, respectively.

Garner tied for first place on uneven bars for the first individual event title of her career. She becomes the sixth different gymnast across four different events to win an indivudal title this season. The Razorbacks closed strong, posting a season-best 49.225 in the final rotation on floor exercise.

Mia Bargiacchi set a career mark (9.850), while Jessica Yamzon matched her career best (9.850) set last week at Auburn. Samantha Nelson also scored a season best (9.875), while McGlone (9.825) matched a season best to close out the meet.

Notable

  • LSU has won 10 straight meetings in the series, including five regular-season meets. Arkansas last won in Fayetteville during the 2012 season.
  • Arkansas scored a season-best 49.000 on vault to open the meet and a season-best 49.225 on floor exercise to close the meet.
  • Hailey Garner scored a career-best 9.900 on uneven bars, her best score in any event in her career, to tie for first place in the event.
  • Four different gymnasts, Amanda Wellick, Sydney McGlone, Jessica Yamzon, and most recently, Hailey Garner, have combined for five scores of 9.900 this season.

  • Four of the five competing gymnasts matched or set a season best on floor exercise, including Mia Bargiacchi (9.850), who set a career best, and Jessica Yamzon (9.850), who matched a career best.
  • Jessica Yamzon scored a 39.200 in the all-around, her third-best all-around score this season.
  • Arkansas will face two more teams ranked in the top 10 nationally: No. 3 Florida (Feb. 17) and No. 10 Kentucky (March 3). 

Up Next

Arkansas hosts its second straight top-five opponent in No. 3 Florida next Friday night. The Razorbacks wrap up the regular season with road meets at Michigan State on Feb. 25 and No. 10 Kentucky on March 3, before returning home for a Senior Night tri-meet against San Jose State and Centenary on March 10.

Single-meet tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for youth 17 and under. Admission is also free for UA students with ID. Tickets are also available for the NCAA Regional that Arkansas will be hosting in Barnhill Arena on April 1. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for youth and UA students.
