FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Four Florida players scored in double figures led by Mike Miller who poured in 19 points as the 11th ranked Gators downed Arkansas 80-71 at Bud Walton Arena on Tuesday night.
Florida (19-5, 8-3 SEC) shot 65 percent in the second half and nearly 55 percent from the field for the game to post a nine-point road victory. The win was the first for Florida at Bud Walton Arena.
The Gators buried the Hogs at the free throw line hitting 17 of 20 attempts while Arkansas (13-11, 5-6 SEC) struggled to hit four of 12 from the charity stripe.
“We couldn’t throw it in the ocean,” Arkansas head coach Nolan Richardson said. “Florida’s ability to make shots and our inability to make shots was the difference. They were 17 of 20 from the free throw line and we were four of 12. That was the game.”
Miller hit only four of 10 from the field, but nailed eight of nine free throws to lead the Gators. Miller also provided a punishing blow when he completed a four-point play early in the second half to stifle a Razorback comeback.
Kenyan Weaks provided 13 points off the bench for the Gators while Udonis Haslem and Brent Wright tallied 13 and 10 points respectively.
Razorback freshman Joe Johnson hit seven of 11 from the field to lead the Hogs with 15 points. Sophomore Brandon Dean scored 12 points in the losing cause.
Everytime we would make a run they would answer. That is what good teams do. We would get close and then we would have silly mistakes and turnovers. We are still trying to learn how to play basketball.”
Arkansas will host western division rival LSU on Saturday at Bud Walton Arena. The Razorbacks and Tigers will tip things off at 12:05 p.m. in a game televised by Jefferson-Pilot Sports.
