FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Powered by Tyson Invitational lived up to its top billing as UA athletes posted a new school record and two new NCAA automatic qualifying times in the midst of some of the world’s best professional athletes.
In his indoor debut junior Tyson Gay broke his own school record in the 60-meter dash as he earned runner-up honors in a loaded field of Olympians and world champions. In the end it was Nike’s Jason Smoots who took the tape with a time of 6.54.
Gay was very close to winning and gave a very trying lean that resulted with a crash and an NCAA auto time of 6.55. He surpassed his previous time of 6.57 that he posted at the 2004 Southeastern Conference Championships.
