George advances in 400 meters

FAYETTEVILLE – Regina George, a member of the University of Arkansas women’s track and field team, extended her 2011 season Thursday with a qualifying run in the 400 meters at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Competition at the national meet began Thursday at Historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.

Arkansas had three runners from its 2011 team sit in the blocks in the first round of the 400 meters. George was the Razorbacks’ top performer and will advance to Friday’s semifinal with a qualifying time of 52.89, good for 15th overall. Shelise Williams and Whitney Jones clocked in at 53.69 and 53.94, respectively, and will not move on to the next round. Williams was two spots out of advancing.

Brittany Hyter, running in the first round of the 400-meter hurdles, crossed the line in a time of 58.37 to finish fifth in her heat and 18th overall. She will not advance to the semifinal heats, just missing a spot in the next round by two spots.

In other first-round action for the Razorbacks, Stephanie Brown finished 23rd overall in the 800 meters with a time of 2:06.75. The soon-to-be junior for Arkansas will not advance to the next round. In the semifinal round of the 1,500 meters, Kristen Gillespie finished 26th overall with a time of 4:23.62 and will not advance to Saturday’s finals.

A trio of former Razorbacks turned in strong efforts in their respective events to advance to the next round of competition. LaShaunte’a Moore, the 2004 NCAA outdoor champion in the 200 meters for Arkansas, won her heat in a time of 11.12, good for a spot in Friday’s semifinal. Jessica Cousins, in the 400 meters, also qualified for the next round with a 52.85 showing in her heat. In the 1,500 meters, Christin Wurth-Thomas secured her spot in Saturday’s final with a time of 4:08.32, the top qualifying mark.

Former Arkansas distance standout Amy Yoder Begley is scheduled to compete later Thursday night in the finals of the 10,000 meters. Competition at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships continue Friday morning. Follow the action that will be televised Friday at 10 p.m. (CT) on ESPN2.
