George, McKnight advance on NCAA day one
EUGENE, Ore. — On day one of the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Championships, the No. 7 University of Arkansas women’s track and field team collected two qualifiers for event finals with Regina George at 400 meters and Sparkle McKnight in the 400-meter hurdles. Competition at the national meet in Eugene, Ore., will resume Thursday at 3 p.m. (CT) with the beginning of the heptathlon. George was the second-overall qualifier in the semifinal round of the 400 meters. The Razorback senior won her heat in a time of 51.57 to earn an automatic bid into the championship race. With Wednesday’s performance, George ties her fastest effort in an NCAA Championships race. She clocked an identical time in last year’s semifinal round in Des Moines, Iowa. The final of the 400 meters will be run Friday at 7:55 p.m. The Razorbacks’ second qualifier of the day was McKnight who had the fastest at-large time to advance to the event final. Running in the final of three semifinal heats, she crossed the finish line in a time of 56.70 which was the fifth-fastest time among the final eight moving on. The final of the women’s 400-meter hurdles will be run Friday at 6:30 p.m., the first track event of day three. George and McKnight are set to return to the track Thursday as part of the Razorbacks’ 4×400-meter relay for the semifinal heats. Arkansas has the fifth-fastest time in the country in the event with its school-record time of 3:28.42 at the Texas Relays in March. After a relatively light schedule on day one of the NCAA Championships, Arkansas is set for competition in four events Thurday. Makeba Alcide will be the first Razorback in action with the start of the heptathlon. She enters the meet with an NCAA-leading score of 5,968 points. Day two will also feature semifinal heats for Stephanie Brown at 1,500 meters, Grace Heymsfield in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the team’s 4×400-meter relay.
