Golden Spikes spotlight for Cox

FAYETTEVILLE – Razorback infielder Zack Cox is featured this week as Baseball America’s Golden Spikes Spotlight. Earlier this season, Cox, along with teammate Brett Eibner, was named to the 33rd Golden Spikes Award Watch List with the opportunity of being honored as the top amateur baseball player in the nation. Entering the week, Cox led the Southeastern Conference with his .444 batting average; following his 3-for-5 effort Tuesday against Oral Roberts, he now stands at .449. The Louisville, Ky., native also leads the conference in hits (70) and is second in runs scored (48). In a show of his well-round performance through Arkansas’ first 38 games this season, he is also among the top 10 in the SEC in on-base percentage, RBI, total bases and walks.

Cox has hit in 37 of the Razorbacks’ 38 games this season. He opened the season with a 24-game hitting streak and is currently riding a 13-game streak. He has at least two hits in 12 of his last 13 ballgames, including 10 straight. In addition to his lofty statistics, Cox has six home runs, seven doubles and 43 RBI.

Arkansas has reeled off 12 consecutive wins heading into its weekend series at Florida. The Hogs lead the SEC with their 12-3 record during league play. The Arkansas-Florida matchup is scheduled to begin Friday at McKethan Stadium in Gainesville, Fla., with first pitch set for 5:30 p.m. (CT). Games two and three of the series will start at noon on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday’s game will be televised by Sun Sports (DirecTV – Ch. 653; Dish Network – Ch. 422).
