Good and Bad in Tennessee

Chattanooga, Tenn. – The Razorback tennis team struggled today at the Icy Hot ITA All American in Chattanooga, Tenn., where they are competing in the pre-qualifying rounds in hopes of advancing to the main draw of the event.
The event places 256 players from several Division I schools in the same draw playing for a spot in the main qualifying on October 7th and 8th. During the main qualifying players will attempt to earn a spot in the main draw featuring the nation’s top 64 players. The event plays host to both singles and doubles competition.
“This was a tough day for us in the first couple of rounds,” head coach Robert Cox stated. “I’m disappointed with our overall performance, but hopefully it will better prepare us for matches in the future.”
Arkansas’ efforts towards qualification today did not come out so strong, but one bright spot lies in the play of Nathan Price. Price won both of his matches today and moved on to the round of 64. In the first round Price played a three set match against Brigham Young’s Nima Roshan winning, 6-4,3-6,6-1. His next match found him facing Lance Vodika of Saint Louis University. Price won easily by a score of, 6-1,6-1.
“Nathan came on strong today, and played well in the first two rounds,” Cox said. “His effort made it a great day for him, and he looks to be getting tougher.”
Rohan Gajjar played Damar Johnson of Louisville first round. The match played closely throughout with Gajjar coming out on top, 6-4,4-6,6-4. In his second round match he would lose to Vanderbilt’s Lewis Smith, 6-3,6-3. Matthew Roberts won his first match, 6-2,6-1 against Jerry Murray of Tennessee Chattanooga, but in the second round Tigran Martirosyan of Kentucky beat him after a close first set, 7-6,6-0. Talley Parker faced Oregon’s Thomas Bieri. Bieri moved into the second round with a win of, 6-3,6-1. Andrei Nicoara lost his match against California Santa Barbara’s Mike Placek. Placek took the match, 7-5,6-3. Imraan Ismail played Marek Gebicki of Montana State in a three set match. Gebicki eventually won, 6-4,2-6,6-2. Clemson’s Robbye Poole competed against Arkansas’ Viktor Hebrand in the first round. Hebrand would fall to Poole, 6-3,6-2.
Tomorrow the Razorbacks will continue play with the beginning of doubles competition. Arkansas will have three teams playing, Rohan Gajjar and Imraan Ismail, Talley Parker and Andrei Nicoara, and Viktor Hebrand and Matt Roberts. Nathan Price will also begin his round of 64 match at 9 a.m. when he plays Karim Alayli of Mississippi.
