Gym'Backs get it done in the classroom

Jump to teams ||Jump to individuals FAYETTEVILLE — Nine University of Arkansas gymnasts earned National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches for Women academic honors leading the Gym’Backs to 24th place as a team. The Gym’Backs have been among the Southeastern Conference and national leaders in the classroom and their tradition of success continued this year. "This is a really great accomplishment," said Arkansas co-head coach Rene Cook. "Of course we’re very proud of what the team does in the gym but this goes a step farther. Achieving academic success demonstrates a commitment to the team and to the individuals future and I’m very proud of all of them." Arkansas’ nine selections ties the program best as the Gym’Backs also had nine individuals honored in 2004 and 2005. Six seniors made the list and all were honored for the fourth consecutive time. Audra Loveless, Hanna McLeod and Dana McQuillin along with retired gymnasts Whitney Cashwell, Kim Harris and Brooke Lawrence were honored. Also making the list is Emily Peacock for the second time and Rachel Barnett and Alexandra LaChance are both first-time selections. Loveless garnered a perfect 4.0 in kinesiology, while McQuillina and Barnett check in with 3.90 GPAs in sociology and kinesiology, respectively, leading Arkansas. To be selected, a gymnast must have either a current year or cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or better. As a team, Arkansas ranked 24th overall and was the second-highest SEC team behind Alabama. The Gym’Backs have a 3.3 team GPA. Southern Utah is the highest ranked team on the list with a 3.6542 while Eastern Michigan has the most individuals selected with 12.
