FAYETTEVILLE – University of Arkansas junior Meredith Hays will participate in this weekend’s USA Volleyball National Team open tryouts in Colorado Springs, Colo. The three-day process will be held Feb. 21-23 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. Hays will be representing the Razorbacks among a group featuring 248 athletes from 106 colleges and universities.
With one year of collegiate eligibility remaining, Hays will be evaluated for potential placement with the U.S. Women’s National and U.S. Collegiate National Teams. In her first season at Arkansas, Hays was an AVCA All-America Honorable Mention selection and a member of the AVCA All-South and All-SEC Teams. She was one of the top attackers in the country, ranking 49th in the NCAA with 3.94 kills per set and 46th in the NCAA with 4.47 points per set. Hays registered double-digit kill totals in 26 of 30 matches in 2013 including five matches with 20 or more kills.
The Hereford, Texas, native also tied for the team lead with nine double-doubles. Seven of those nine double-double performances came during the conference season. Hays finished the season averaging 2.30 digs per set. From the service line, she was second on the team with 26 aces and tallied at least one ace in the Razorbacks’ final 10 matches of the season.
Last season, the Razorback trio of Liz Fortado, Emily Helm and Summer Morgan attended the USA Volleyball open tryouts in Colorado. Three-time Olympic gold medalist and U.S. Women’s National Team head coach Karch Kiraly will be in attendance with his staff to help lead the tryout process.
