Hester talks about the first round

This is the fourth in a series of diary entries from Arkansas head women’s golf coach Kelley Hester about her experience with Amanda McCurdy at the U.S. Women’s Open. The U.S. Women’s Open takes place June 29-July 2, at Newport Country Club in Newport, R.I. McCurdy, who completed her eligibility in May, is making her second consecutive U.S. Women’s Open appearance and Hester is caddying for her. Check back in the coming days to follow Amanda and Kelley’s experience. Friday, 2006First RoundUS Women’s OpenAmanda had a little trouble getting out of the gate today as she didn’t have a par until her 6th hole, #15 but she settled in and played better on the last 2/3 of the holes. The wind was whipping pretty good on holes 12-18 but Amanda made some solid pars on 15, 17, and 18. She was cruising along pretty well on her backside (1-9) until she was sidetracked with a double bogey on hole #6. She had legitimate birdie opportunities on 1 and 2 but the putts weren’t dropping on the bumpy, wet greens. Tomorrow should prove to be a better day as we will go out before the wind picks up, hopefully. It will take a good number to make the cut but we all know Amanda is capable of doing great things. My amateur guess is that the cut will be somewhere around 10 over so we’ll see. Go Hogs,Kelley
