Hester's final entry from the 2006 U.S. Women's Open

This is the final in a series of diary entries from Arkansas head women’s golf coach Kelley Hester about her experience with Amanda McCurdy at the U.S. Women’s Open. The U.S. Women’s Open takes place June 29-July 2, at Newport Country Club in Newport, R.I. McCurdy, who completed her eligibility in May, is making her second consecutive U.S. Women’s Open appearance and Hester is caddying for her. Check back in the coming days to follow Amanda and Kelley’s experience. Saturday, July 1, 2006Second RoundUS Women’s OpenAmanda was determined to go out and have a great day today but unfortunately, started with a bogey on the scorable par 5, 1st hole and just never quite got on track. Similar to Friday, she wasn’t able get on a run of solid pars. Amanda totaled 10 of 14 fairways, 9 greens and 34 putts (compared to Friday’s 9 fairways, 9 greens, and 34 putts). The long, wet par 4s proved to be too much. All in all, it seems that Newport C.C. (and the USGA) seems to be winning as only 2 players are under par through 36 holes and the cut will be right around 8 over par. Although disappointed about missing the cut, the experience of playing in a second consecutive U.S. Women’s Open will prove to be invaluable to Amanda in her future endeavors. Even though she didn’t play her best, she represented the Lady Razorbacks well, sporting Razorback gear everyday. Occasionally, a knowledgeable fan would yell “soooie or woo pig” and Amanda would smile and wave or whoop back. Wish you all could have been here as Newport is a beautiful setting, right on the Atlantic Ocean, but I hope you have enjoyed my account…thanks for following.Go Hogs,Kelley
