Hog Golfers Capture Share of Del Walker Intercollegiate
LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Arkansas men’s golf team captured its first tournament title in a span of 40 events on Friday at the Del Walker Intercollegiate.
The Razorbacks and St. Mary’s of California finished in a tie for the title at the Virginia Country Club with a 4-over-par score of 856 on the 6,631-yard, par-71 layout. The University of San Diego finished third with 9-over-par 861.
In the first tournament under the guidance of new head coach Brad McMakin, the Hogs snapped a winless streak that dated back to April 13, 2003, when UA earned a share of the title at the Billy Hitchcock Intercollegiate. Arkansas and St. Mary’s both posted identical scores of 3-over par 287 in Friday’s final round.
Redshirt sophomore Jason Turner turned in a career-best finish with a tie for third place to lead the Razorbacks. The Little Rock native posted a final round 72 (+1) to finish at even par (213) for the tournament, just one shot behind event winners Aaron Conrad of San Jose State and Joe Panzeri of San Diego.
Sophomore transfer Jason Cuthbertson fired a 1-under-par 70 on Friday to finish in a tie for 12th place in his first event as a Razorback. Another Hog transfer, sophomore Andrew Landry, slipped from a tie for ninth to a tie for 22nd place after shooting a 4-over-par 75. Landry finished the tournament at 217 (+4).
Senior Beau Glover finished his 23rd career tournament in a tie for 30th at 6-over-par 219. The Sherwood, Ark., native shot a 3-over-par 74 in Friday’s final round. Junior Barrett Lais finished in a tie for 36th after his best round of the tournament with an even-par 70 on Friday. He carded a 7-over-par 220 over 54 holes with rounds of 77 (+6) and 72 (+1) on Thursday.
The Razorbacks return to the golf course on Oct. 2-3 at the Wolf Pack Invitational in Reno, Nev.
