Hogs Blow Down Competition at Hurricane Invita
TULSA, Okla. – Seven other teams found out how good the Razorbacks were during opening round play of the Tenth Annual Tulsa Hurricane Men’s Tennis Invitational. The Razorbacks had first round singles success, winning all of their first round games.

The Razorbacks finished the day 6-1 in singles play. Talley Parker suffered the only loss of the day after qualifying for the main draw in a 6-4, 6-4, defeat over Oklahoma’s Matt Lopez. He fell to Tulane’s Patrizio Maucci, 6-1, 6-1. Parker will face Southwest Missouri’s Jacob Neimeyer in the first round of the backdraw tomorrow.

Freshmen Matt Roberts and Adrians Zguns made quick work of their first round foes. Roberts defeated Drake’s Zlatko Letica, 6-1, 6-4, to move on to the second round where he will play Oklahoma State’s Thomas Bohunicky. Zguns defeated Drury’s Anthony Perkins, 6-4, 7-6, to face Ryan Livesay of Tulsa.

Kristofer Ivarsson came through for the Hogs after losing his first set. He finished the match defeating Oklahoma’s Matt Ogle, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. Ivarsson will face Jack Frankowicz (Drake) in tomorrow’s second round action. Senior Aleksey Bubis made his presence known, knocking off Tulane’s Hannu Piiroinen, 6-2, 6-3. Bubis will take the court against Dustin Taylor (Tulsa) at 9 a.m. Saturday.

In what seemed to be the most grueling match of the day, walk-on freshman Hunter Benson upset Tulsa’s Olof Sjolund in a two-and-a-half hour battle. Benson broke Sjolund in the seventh game of the third set to go up 5-2. He then battled out the next two games to win the match, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. Benson will face Predrag Pavlicic (SMS) in the second round.

In doubles action, Roberts paired with Zguns to make quick work of Drake’s Letica and Felipe Montenegro with an 8-1 win. However, this Hogs duo was derailed by Tulane’s Piiroinen and Maucci in an 8-4 defeat.

Aleksey Bubis and Kristofer Ivarsson teamed up to get a first round win over Southwest Missouri’s Pavlicic and Pavel Hanek in an 8-5 win. Their second round match saw them face Oklahoma’s Brad Prigmore and Matt Lopez. The final saw another Hogs win, 8-4. Bubis and Ivarsson will face Oklahoma’s Tommy Garrison and Matt Long tomorrow at 1:30.
Arkansas’ third doubles team of Hunter Benson and Talley Parker faced a defeat by Oklahoma’s Tommy Garrison and Matt Long, 8-4. Benson and Parker moved on to face Drake’s Frankowicz and Matthew McClure in the backdraw and lost 8-1.

Overall head coach Robert Cox was pleased with the play of the Hogs.

“I’m real proud of all my guys,” Cox said. “This is the first time we’ve really went to a tournament and all six guys won their first round matches. I can, however, see that we do need to work on our doubles teams. But overall, I’m happy. Tomorrow is another day and we just have to come back and se what we can do.”
