Hogs Claim 15th Consecutive Southeastern Confe

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Carried by the Razorback distance runners, the University of Arkansas track and field squad grabbed their 15th consecutive Southeastern Conference title on Sunday at the SEC Championships at Nutter Field House in Lexington, Kentucky.
The Razorbacks continued their conference domination claiming their 28th SEC title out of 29 events and their 66th conference title ever. The only SEC title that the Hogs did not win was the 1996 indoor conference title held in Lexington, Ky.
The Hogs grabbed the team title by scoring 108 points in the two-day meet. LSU finished second with 81 and Tennessee finished third with 80.
“Winning the conference title was really great,” UA head coach John McDonnell said. “This was the only place that we had lost a conference title so it was really good to win here.”
Senior Kenny Evans started the day off right for the Hogs claiming his fourth-consecutive indoor conference title clearing 7-1.75. After being the only competitor to clear the winning height, Evans raised the bar to 7-5 and attempted to set a new Nutter Field House facility record but missed on all three attempts.
“I am glad to win the title,” Evans said. “The support from the fans was great. I think that they came out to see a great jumper. I wanted to break the facility record and almost got it on my second attempt. Now I just have to get ready for the NCAA’s.”
With Evans 10 points, the Razorbacks remained in second place but were only one point behind the leader, Georgia.
Sophomore Kevin Baker added another point for the Hogs finishing eighth in the 60-meter dash in 6.80 but UA remained in second still trailing the Bulldogs but now the Hogs were behind by four points.
The Hogs finally took the lead and never trailed again scoring nine points in the 800-meter run. Freshman Dirk Heinze finished in third place in 1:48.31 provisionally qualifying him for the NCAA meet and missed the automatic qualifying mark by only .01 seconds. Senior Andy Beasley and freshman Chris Mulvaney added the other points finishing seventh in 1:50.43 and eighth in 1:51.41, respectively.
Once again the distance runners came up big for the Hogs when seniors Ryan Travis and Sharif Karie finished second and third in the mile in 4:01.04 and 4:02.47. For the second night in a row, Alabama’s David Kimani, who claimed the 3,000-meter title on Saturday night, would be battled by a Hog to the end. In the 3,000 meters, Karie was battling but in the mile it was Travis nipping at his heels.
“Me and Sharif and Coach (McDonnell) thought that Kimani was going to sit back and let us lead throughout the race,” Travis said. “I was still close to him in the last 50 meters and I thought that I almost had him. He looked to his left and I was on his right. Then with the crowd screaming he finally found me and pushed it out at the end.”
Travis’ time in the mile was good enough to qualify him for the national championship meet.
The Hogs next four points came when Sam Glover finished fifth in the 400-meter dash in 47.27.
Tennessee continued to gain ground on the Hogs through out the sprint events and eventually pulled with in three points after finishing one-two-three in the 200-meter dash, but once again the Hog harriers came up big for the Razorbacks – this time in the 5,000-meter run.
Senior Murray Link and Sophomore Daniel Lincoln dominated the event with Link claiming his first SEC title running the 5,000 meters in 14:07.29 with Lincoln close behind finishing in 14:12.06. The third-place finisher finished over 15 seconds behind the two leaders. The Hogs gained 25 points in the event when freshman Fernando Cabada and senior Alan Dunleavy finished in fifth at 14:40.83 and 14:45.15, respectively.
Not only was Link’s time good enough to make him a provisional qualifier in the event but he also set a new facility record in the process. The previous record holder was former Arkansas All-American Godfrey Siamusiye whose time was 14:11.18 set at the 1996 conference meet.
“We knew that we needed to get some points going into this event and we did,” Link said. “Getting 25 points in that event was really huge for us. Secondary to winning the title for me was getting into nationals and that time should get me in.”
The Hogs gained four more points when Jason Ward finished fifth jumping 51-3 which provisionally qualified him for NCAA’s.
The Razorbacks’ final 10 points came when the Distance Medley Relay claimed the SEC title finishing 9:47.74, setting another Nutter Field House record. Competing on the DMR was Mulvaney in the 1,200-meter led, Baker in the 400-meter leg, Karie in the 800-meter leg and Heinze running the mile leg.
The Hogs will look ahead to the NCAA Championships to be held in Fayetteville, Ark., at the Randal Tyson Track Center on March 9-10. The Hogs will be looking to claim their 37th national title and fifth-consecutive national indoor title.
