Hogs Complete First Half of Tournament
TULSA, Okla. – Six of the seven Razorbacks who made the trip qualified for the main draw of the 2002 Omni Hotels Region V Tournament at the University of Tulsa. Hunter Benson and Talley Parker participated in a play-in on Thursday, with the main draw’s first round of singles and first and second round of doubles being played on Friday.

In Thursday’s action, Hunter Benson defeated Nebraska’s Jose Rivera, 6-5, 6-3, to qualify for the main draw. Talley Parker was forced into the qualifying consolation with a loss in the first round
to Juan Escalante of Wichita State in three, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3. Parker then played the third round of the consolation bracket, losing to Creighton’s Richie Gonzalez.

In Friday’s action, four of the six Hogs in the main draw moved on to the round of 32. Kristofer Ivarsson picked up a two set win over Oral Roberts’ Jared Welch, 6-2, 6-2. Aleksey Bubis defeated Justin Hunter (Colorado), 5-7, 6-3, 7-6. Eduardo Pacheco moved on to the second round with a win over Sanjeev Parmanathan (Saint Louis), 6-4, 6-0.

Arkansas suffered two losses when true freshmen Matt Roberts and Hunter Benson both fell in the first round. Roberts fell to SMS’s Rishi Garharran, 6-3, 7-5. Benson took a 6-1, 6-2 loss to Tulsa’s Alejandrao Tejerina.

Tulsa continued to be a second home for redshirt freshman Adrains Zguns who won the Tulsa Hurricane Invitational earlier this year. He picked up two wins to move on to the round of 16, giving him a 6-0 record in singles at Tulsa’s Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Zguns picked up his first round win over Tom de Larzac of St. Louis, 7-5, 6-3. He downed Silviu Tnasoiu (Oklahoma), 6-2, 6-3, to move on to the quarterfinals.

Also appearing in the quarters will be Aleksey Bubis. Busis defeated Dalibor Mihajlovic (Indiana State), 6-2, 7-5, to move on to the Sweet 16. Falling in the round of 32 was Pacheco and Ivarsson. Pacheco fell to Wichita State’s Joggan Austin, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3. Ivarsson was ousted by Vedran Vidovic (Indiana State), 7-5, 4-6, 6-1.

In doubles action, two Razorback duos moved on to the Sweet 16. Pacheco and Roberts def eated Thomas Bohunicky and Jiri Jezek (Oklahoma State), 8-2, in the first round and knocked out D.J. Gaetz and Jose Rivera (Nebraska), 8-4 to reach the quarterfinals.

The Tulsa Hurricane Invitational doubles champion duo of Bubis and Ivarsson made their record a perfect 5-0 at Tulsa, defeating Tom McCarthy and Kevin Otto (Creighton), 9-8 (5), to give them a spot in the quarters.

Play continues through Sunday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center at the University of Tulsa.
