Hogs Complete Sweep of Flames, 9-2

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas bullpen produced another outstanding performance on Sunday as freshman right-hander Shaun Seibert allowed only one hit in 4.2 innings out of the pen in the Razorbacks’ 9-2 win over Illinois-Chicago in front of 6,389 fans at Baum Stadium.
The 14th-ranked Hogs completed the three-game sweep to improve to 12-1 on the season. Seibert (1-0) earned the first win of his career after replacing starting pitcher Josh Smith with one out in the fifth inning. Smith pitched 4.1 innings, allowing two runs on five hits.
“The bright spot was Seibert,” Arkansas Head Coach Dave Van Horn said. “I thought he was tremendous. He’ll get a start next weekend – he deserves one. He’s grown up a little bit and it’s time to give him the ball and let him start one.”
Seibert’s performance on Sunday lowered the Arkansas bullpen’s ERA to a minuscule 1.69 in 58.2 innings of work this season.
Scott Hode led the Razorbacks’ 12-hit attack with three hits in four at bats and two RBI. Jake Dugger plated two runs with his second home run of the season in the seventh inning. He finished with three RBI and two runs scored.
Scott Bridges, Casey Rowlett and Chris Hollensworth all chipped in with two hits each. Rowlett’s two singles extended his hitting streak to 13 games and increased his team-leading batting average to .491. Bridges is just behind at .486.
The Hogs hit .373 over the three-game series with Danny Hamblin leading the way with a .545 average. Hollensworth had a break-out series with three hits in four at bats.
Travis Kempf took the loss for UIC after allowing four runs on seven hits in five innings of work. He walked four and struck out four while throwing 100 pitches.
The Flames center fielder Mike Bruszer went 2 for 3 with a RBI as UIC managed six hits on the day. Illinois-Chicago hit .163 as a team during the three-game series.
The Razorbacks got on the scoreboard in the second inning on RBI singles by Hode and Hollensworth. UIC answered in the third inning on Bruszer RBI single.
Arkansas tacked on single tallies in the fourth and fifth innings. Hode singled home a run in the fourth and Dugger picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.
Arkansas will have Monday off before traveling to Stillwater, Okla., on Tuesday for a 3 p.m. contest with 27th-ranked Oklahoma State at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium. Left-handed sophomore James Gilbert is scheduled to start for the Hogs.
