Hogs Crush Illinois-Chicago, 15-4

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas bats exploded for a season-high 15 runs and 15 hits in a 15-4 win over Illinois-Chicago on Saturday afternoon.
“We set the tone in the bottom of the first inning with a lead-off double and then Danny (Hamblin) drove them in with a bases-loaded triple,” Arkansas Head Coach Dave Van Horn said. “Then we came out in the second inning and kind of bunted them to death, and we were off and rolling again.”
Hamblin finished the day 2 for 3 with three RBI and three runs scored. Scott Bridges added two hits, including his second home run – a solo shot in the fifth inning. Clint Arnold, Clay Goodwin and Craig Gentry also collected two hits apiece.
Casey Rowlett extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a bunt single in the second inning. Chris Hollensworth also added his first home run as a Razorback, a two-run shot in the seventh inning.
The season-high 6,843 fans at Baum Stadium saw Charley Boyce pitch his best game of the season to improve to 2-1. The right-hander from Broken Arrow, Okla., allowed just one hit in seven innings of work. Boyce lowered his ERA from 7.94 to 4.91. It marked the second straight game the Hogs starting pitcher allowed just one hit. Nick Schmidt allowed only one hit in six innings on Friday. Devon Collis pitched the final two innings.
“His performance was big for our team and it was big for Charley,” Van Horn said. “Mentally it was big for him to go out and have a good outing and gain confidence. Charley is a guy that can get on a roll when he is confident.”
Boyce was charged with four unearned runs as the Razorbacks tied a season high with four errors.
Arnold got things started for the Hogs by leading off the bottom of the first inning with a double to left-center field. Bridges then dropped down a perfect bunt single and Rowlett loaded the bases by drawing a walk. Hamblin followed with his bases-clearing triple. Clay Goodwin added a sacrifice fly in the inning as the Hogs built a 4-1 lead.
The Razorback would go on to score in every frame but the eighth. Flames starting pitcher Jason Foster was lifted after pitching four innings and allowing nine runs (eight earned) on nine hits. Scott Saling pitched the final four innings and gave up six runs (three earned) on six hits.
UIC managed just three hits off Razorback pitching with singles from Bart Babineaux, Bryan Russo and Nick Rainwater.
Arkansas will go for the sweep on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. at Baum Stadium.
