NORMAN, Okla. – Three runs in the first inning and 1 2/3 innings of perfect relief by Scott Woods helped Arkansas to a 5-4 win over Oklahoma Tuesday night at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
The Razorbacks (19-19) improved to just 3-11 in road games this season and snapped a four-game road losing streak. The Sooners (14-23) had their four-game winning streak snapped.
UA starter Justin Leraris (2-0) limited OU to one run on four hits, walked two and struck out two in five innings to earn the victory. Woods entered the game with a 5-4 lead and the tying run on second base with two outs in the eighth inning, but retired the last five OU batters in order to earn his third save and extend his scoreless innings streak to 14 1/3.
Austin Mix (0-7) gave up three runs (one earned) on five hits, struck out five and walked none in five innings and was charged with the loss.
Three hits and two Sooner errors helped Arkansas jump to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Kyle Washburn’s two-run single plated the first two runs before an errant pick-off attempt by Mix allowed Ryan Fox to score from third base with the third run.
The Sooners got on the board in the bottom of the third when Jerome Godsey singled with two out, stole second and scored on Jason Bartlett’s double to right field.
OU’s Greg Dobbs cut the Hogs’ lead to 5-4 with a one-out, three-run double in the bottom of the eighth that chased UA reliever Wes McCrotty. Woods came out of the bullpen to coax a groundout by Sean Smith and strikeout Charlie Frasier to end the threat.
Arkansas will travel to Auburn, Ala., on Thursday for a three-game Southeastern Conference series at Auburn beginning Friday at 6:30 p.m. CT. The Sooners will travel to Manhattan, Kan., for a three-game Big 12 Conference series at Kansas State beginning Friday at 3 p.m. CT.
