FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Less than a week after finishing fourth at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships Arkansas will travel to Starkville, Miss. this weekend to open the 2002 outdoor track season at the Southeastern Conference Quad. The Razorbacks will look to gain some experience as they start the outdoor season and go head-to-head with western division league schools.
“Since this is our first meet we’re just looking to get our feet wet,” Arkansas Head Coach John McDonnell explained. “We’re not worried about winning this one. We just want to get something positive for each kid. That’s our main goal. Most of the guys that competed at the NCAA Indoor Championships will not be competing at Starkville; those guys need a rest. So we’ll be looking to our guys who did not compete last weekend at the NCAA meet.”
Arkansas will take 19 athletes to compete in 18 events. Freshman Ahmad Carroll will represent Arkansas in the 100-meter dash. Carroll will also compete in the 200-meter dash and the 4×100 relay team.
Three Razorbacks, senior Sam Glover, junior Eddie Jackson and sophomore Michael Thomas will compete in the 110-meter hurdles. Glover will also compete in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles, the 4×100 and the 4×400. Jackson and Thomas competed last weekend at the NCAA Indoor Championships and will both run in the 200-meter dash and in the 4×100 relay team.
Sophomore Josh Landreth will run in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles and the 4×400 relay. Sophomore Kyle Cleveland, junior Chad Grundy and sophomore William Porr will represent Arkansas in the 800 meters. Sophomore Lawrence Richardson will compete in the 400 meters, the 4×100 and the 4×400. Distance runners, sophomore Fernando Cabada and freshman Zack Sartori will run in the 3,000 meters, while junior Patrick Thomas will run in the 5,000 meters. Sophomore Westley Alkin and senior Andrew Beasley will compete in the 1,500 meters.
Arkansas will have five athletes competing in the field events. In his first collegiate outdoor meet freshman Jonathan Reeves will be throwing the shot put and the discus. Junior Josh Roberts will be the only Hog to compete in the pole vault and freshman Matt Rosebery will be the only Hog to compete in the high jump. Sophomore All-American Maurice Robinson will see competition in the long jump and the triple jump, as well as junior Richard Smith.
