Hogs Rebound with Solid Play


TULSA, Okla.- After a tough first day at the Polo Intercollegiate National Preview, the Arkansas Razorback tennis team rebounded to win four of six matches against Oklahoma.
Arkansas needed to come out with more aggressive play and it did just that with solid performances by the top four singles positions.
“Today we rebounded from yesterday and played solid tennis,” head coach Robert Cox said. “I’m pleased we played better all around and competed much harder in all of our matches.”
At the six spot, Andrei Nicoara struggled, losing to Lee Gregg, 7-5, 6-1. Talley Parker suffered the same fate at number five, losing his match to Silviu Tanasoiu, 6-4, 6-2. Razorbacks won the other four matches.

Imraan Ismail, at the four spot, beat Matt Long, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3. Viktor Hebrand won at number three, 6-3, 6-2. At the two position, Matt Roberts won a three-setter against Ondrej Fukala, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Rojan Gajjar topped Alexei Ivanov at number one, 6-3, 6-2.
Doubles play found Arkansas taking on Fresno State. At three, Parker and Ismail teamed up to take on Alex Krohn and Andy Sinn, and won the match in a tiebreaker, 9-8. The number two doubles team of Hebrand and Roberts played the No. 38 ranked team in the nation, Stefan Suta and Greg Shearer, and lost, 8-3. At the one doubles slot Gajjar and Nicoara played the No. 6 team in the nation in Hector Almada and Sergiu Modoc, and dropped an 8-3 decision.
Adrians Zguns and Nathan Price continued play in Waco, Texas, at the Texas Intercollegiate. Zguns marched into the quarterfinals by beating the nine seed Guillaume Bouvier of Boise State, 7-6, 6-4. Price took on six seed Thomas Schoeck and fell, 6-3, 6-2. After Zguns’ won his third round match, he moved into the quarterfinals and knocked off David Corrie of the University of Texas-Arlington, 7-6, 6-1.
Zguns will face the 10 seed, Divan Coetzee of New Mexico, in the semifinals at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
