Hogs get clean sweep of doubleheader

FAYETTEVILLE — The No. 20 Arkansas Razorback women’s tennis team got strong performances from the bottom part of their lineup Friday, en-route to a doubleheader sweep against Memphis and Oral Roberts at the Dills Indoor Tennis Center. Arkansas (9-2), who decided to give their top players rest with the Oklahoma match looming, were able to utilize the depth of their roster and get huge singles wins across the board.

“It was good to use our depth to our advantage today,” said head coach Michael Hegarty. “We definitely improved across the board.”

The Razorbacks, with their top doubles team and top two of three singles players resting, had a lineup that was much different from what has been seen so far in the season. Sophomore Fernanda Perrotta and freshman Annejimin Koenen saw their first dual match action of the spring season, playing at the No. 3 position in doubles. Both players had a strong performance in the match and defeated Kelly Gray and Dara Toulch of Memphis, 8-1. This performance led to wins at the No. 1 and 2 positions, as well, which gave the Hogs the important doubles point, going into singles play.

Singles play was not much different for the Razorbacks, as they got straight set wins from four of the six courts, as well as a tough three set match win from freshman Valentina Starkova. She defeated Andrea Arques-Garcia, 6-7 (5), 7-5, 1-0 (4). Freshman Kelsey Sundaram also provided a dominating performance for the Hogs as she won in straight sets at the No. 3 spot, 6-0, 6-1, against the Tigers‘ Amanda Brown, for her seventh win of the spring season.

In the second match of the day against Oral Roberts, the lineup remained the same for the Razorbacks, with the exception of sophomore Stephanie Roy and sophomore Kate Lukomskaya switching places at the No. 1 and 2 spots in singles.

After winning the doubles point, the Hogs got another strong match from Sundaram at the No. 3 spot in singles, defeating Tayler Pippen of ORU in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.

In her second dual match appearance of the spring season, Perrotta, again, delivered for Arkansas against Ekatrina Kondrashova, gaining the easy 6-1, 6-0 victory. It wasn’t long after, that sophomore Stephanie Roy clinched the match for the Razorbacks at the No. 2 spot, defeating Kristen Gray, 6-0, 6-1.

The Hogs will be looking to get a much tougher test on Sunday, when they host No. 35 Oklahoma at the Dills Tennis Center. That match is scheduled to begin at noon.
