Hogs hold off late rally to win 11-6

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Arkansas scored the first 10 runs of the game and held off a late San Diego State rally to defeat the Aztecs 11-6 on Friday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

The Razorbacks are now 12-1 on the year, their best start to a season since 2006. San Diego State drops to 2-12 with the loss.

Arkansas starter DJ Baxendale earned his fourth win of the season, throwing five shutout innings with three strikeouts. Baxendale has not allowed a run in 19.1 innings pitched this season. Nolan Sanburn earned the first save of his collegiate career, throwing 1.1 shutout innings with three strikeouts.

San Diego State starter Ethan Miller took the loss to drop to 1-2 on the year. He gave up eight runs, seven earned, in two innings of work.

Kyle Robinson had a team-high three hits to lead Arkansas at the plate. Collin Kuhn homered for the second straight game and drove in three runs, while Matt Reynolds also homered and had two RBI. Tim Carver, Dominic Ficociello and James McCann each added a pair of hits.

Brad Haynal and Cody Slader had two hits to lead San Diego State at the plate. Haynal drove in a pair of runs.

Arkansas jumped on the Aztecs early, scoring twice in the first. Jacob Morris drew a walk with one out and was along for the ride on Reynolds second homer of the season, a two-run blast to left field.

The Razorbacks made the lead 6-0 with four runs in the second. McCann singled to center with one out and then moved to second on a two-out single by Carver. Kuhn followed with his second home run of the series, a three-run shot over the left-center field fence. Morris then doubled over the right fielder’s head and moved to third on an infield single by Reynolds. Reynolds then stole second and the throw from the catcher went into center field, allowing Morris to score from third for the fourth run of the inning.

Arkansas tacked on two more runs in the third. Ficociello doubled to the right-center field gap to lead off the inning and Bo Bigham drew a walk. McCann moved both runners up a base with a sacrifice bunt. McKinney scored both base runners with a double down the left field line to put the Razorbacks in front 8-0.

The Razorbacks scored a single run in the fourth on a two-out RBI single by McCann.

Arkansas made the score 10-0 with a run in the top of the eighth. Ficociello singled to left field, scoring Robinson.

San Diego State made the game interesting with six runs in the bottom of the eighth. The first two runs of the inning came in on a two-RBI double to center field by Haynal. An RBI infield single by Slader made the score 10-3. Chris Wilson drove in two runs with a single to right-center field. A RBI single by Tim Zier closed the inning to cut the Arkansas lead to 10-6.

The Razorbacks added an insurance run in the top of the ninth on a sacrifice fly to center field by Eric Fisher, which plated Matt Vinson.

Game three between Arkansas and San Diego State is scheduled for 8 p.m. on Saturday. Freshman right hander Brandon Moore (2-0, 4.20) will start for the Razorbacks, while the Aztecs have yet to announce a starter for the game.
