Hogs hunt for 28th conference indoor title

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – No. 2 Arkansas Razorback men’s track and field will pursue its 92nd conference title overall and its 28th indoors this weekend at the 2009 SEC Indoor Championships. The event will be held Fri.-Sun., Feb. 27-March 1, 2009 at Kentucky’s Nutter Field House.

Scheduled to compete are No. 2 Arkansas, Alabama, Auburn, No. 8 Florida, No. 12 Georgia, No. 19 Kentucky, No. 5 LSU, Ole Miss, No. 17 South Carolina and No. 20 Tennessee. Friday, the multi-events (pentathlon/heptathlon) will begin at 3:30 p.m. CST. Saturday, field events begin at 10 a.m., running events at 1:10 p.m. and multis at 1:30 p.m. CST. Sunday will wrap-up the event with field events at 10 a.m. and running at 12:30 p.m. CST.

From the 2008 SEC Indoor Championships, where the Razorbacks took the title win with 124 points, Arkansas boasts three defending champions in the long jump (Alain Bailey), the triple jump (Nkosinza Balumbu) and the distance medley relay (Daniel LaCava, Chris Bilbrew and Alex McClary).

Arkansas has made a habit of topping the awards stand at league cross country and track and field championships. The Razorbacks have won a combined 91 conference crowns (41 cross country, 27 indoor and 23 outdoor). Since the Hogs joined the SEC in time for the 1991-92 season, Arkansas has won 46 of 52 league championships in the three sports. The Hogs have captured 17 of 18 cross country titles, 15 of 17 indoor crowns and 14 of 17 outdoor championships in that time span. The Razorbacks have won the last four SEC Indoor team titles and 11 of the last 12 including a seven-season streak (1997-2003).

In addition to its team dominance since entering the league, Arkansas boasts by far the most individual event champions in the past 17 SEC Indoor Track and Field Championships. The Razorbacks have claimed 81 of 289 event titles awarded in all events since 1992. UA has won 14 of 17 5,000-meter races, 10 of 17 3,000-meter runs, eight of 17 mile runs and 10 of 17 triple jump competitions. Additionally, the Hogs have brought home 11 of 15 distance medley relays contested since the event was added to the conference meet in 1994.
