It would take a small notebook to list all the great running backs in the history of the SEC. Most would have Bo Jackson and/or Herschel Walker at the top. You’d probably find Darren McFadden’s name up there somewhere, too.
But not one of them can match what Alex Collins has done. The Razorback freshman is the first running back in the history of the storied SEC to rush for 100+ yards in the first three games of his collegiate career. That’s rarified air for a young man who was just beginning his senior year of high school 12 months ago. The Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.,native arrived in Fayetteville with much fanfare, and he’s lived up to the hype. As is Jonathan Williams, Collins is a threat to take it to the house every time he touches the ball, and more and more he’s becoming the player Hog fans want to talk about most.
The road gets tougher this week with a trip to Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights won again Saturday, but like Arkansas, played much of the game without their starting quarterback. Gary Nova was lost early in the game, and he’s said to be day to day heading into the new week. The Hogs will be nursing Brandon Allen’s bruised shoulder back to health, so both teams will be getting their backups some extra reps this week.
It was a great weekend for the SEC, save Tennessee. Alabama and Texas A&M put on a great show, and both the South Carolina/Vandy and Auburn/Mississippi State games were entertaining. Even Ole Miss got in on the act. It’s still fun to watch Texas get beat.
Football season is kicking into high gear now. Should be a great week.
