If Tuesday night’s win over Southeastern Louisiana is any indication, Mike Anderson is going to have some tough decisions to make regarding playing time when conference season rolls around next month. Everybody wants to play! And everybody is earning minutes. Four players scored in double figures against the Lions, while three more were within a basket of doing the same. Nobody played even 20 minutes, and everybody scored. December is audition time, and these players know it.
But moreover, Coach A’s third Razorback team embodies the personality of its head coach. It’s a team-first attitude that begins with hard-nosed toughness. The willingness to scratch and claw and stare down an opponent are absolute requirements for a winning basketball team. This team has that. They work in practice. They take care of their business off the floor. They battle for loose balls, and they don’t back down. Just like their coach.
It’s a given that the next couple of months are critical for the future of Razorback football. Recruiting is the lifeblood of every program, and it’s clear the Hogs have some holes to fill. My suspicion is that we are about to see Bret Bielema and his coaching staff show their true metal. These guys can flat out recruit, and there is every reason to believe the caliber of player, particularly on defense, is about to go up.
The record doesn’t show it, but this team got better over the last month of the season. Perhaps the most impressive thing about this team is the way they hung together at the end, when just about everybody else had moved onto other things. That’s a testament to the character of the coaches and players, and it will serve them well in years to come.
Snow’s coming! Go Hogs!
