FAYETTEVILLE – The 18th-ranked University of Arkansas swimming team prepares for the Southeastern Conference Championships in Gainesville, Fla., Feb. 16-19. Arkansas is among five SEC teams ranked in the top 25 going into the conference meet.
The Hogs (9-2, 2-1 SEC) faced Vanderbilt, Tennessee and South Carolina during dual competition this season, only losing to the Lady Vols in the third meet of the year. UA topped Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tenn., and then beat the Gamecocks at the Arkansas Natatorium in November.
Sophomore Chelsea Franklin goes into the league championship meet fourth in the SEC in three events. She clocked her record-breaking time of 4:42.43 in the 500 free during Arkansas’ first home dual of the season. She is also fourth in the conference in the 1,000 and 1,650 freestyle events. Senior Jamie Marks comes into the 1,650 free ranked fourth in the conference while the Hogs 800 freestyle relay team is fourth in the conference going into the championship meet.
Franklin is also ranked ninth in the nation in the 1,650 free with a time of 16:11.63.
Over the weekend, the Razorback divers met the SEC’s best at the 2011 edition of the SEC Championships where the Hogs finished in fourth place. The fourth-place finish is the best that the Hog divers have achieved under the current coaching staff.
During the diving championships, junior Liana Bugslag finished sixth in the platform prelims with 249.65 and came back to finish sixth in the finals competition with 247.30. Freshman Kesha Naylor was fifth during prelims on Sunday morning and finished seventh in finals with a score of 228.25.
