Hogs start strong at Purdue Invite

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.. The No. 18-ranked University of Arkansas swimming and diving team posted strong times in the opening session of the Purdue Invitational at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center in West Lafayette, Ind.

The Hogs turned in six of the top 16 times in the 500-yard freestyle event, including advancing three into Friday nights “A” final. Junior Jamie Marks finished second with a time of 4:48.29 followed by Jillienne Schilling in seventh at 4:52.04 and Alison Templin in eighth at 4:52.10. Freshman Chelsea Franklin and sophomore Sarah Howard along with junior Erica Totten qualified 9th, 14th and 15th, respectively, for the “B” final.

Senior Yi-Ting Siow lead the team in the 200y individual medley, qualifying second for the finals with a time of 2:01.42. Freshman Dannica Brennan touched in at 2:05.29 to take the eighth and final spot in the “A” final. Sophomores Lisa Lunkenheimer and Katie Davis along with senior Leah Pierce will swim in the “B” final.

In the 50y freestyle event, the Razorbacks qualified two athletes as Megan Haskins and Lynette Ng qualified 15th and 16th. Ng advanced after edging out Purdue’s Lauren Gustafson by a hundredth of a second with a time of 23.49 in a swim-off.

The preliminaries in the women’s 3-meter diving event are set to begin at 1 p.m. Eastern time.

Finals begin at 6 p.m. and will include the 200y freestyle relay and the 400y IM relay.
