Hogs Turn in Perfect Team Score at Arkansas Invitational
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Razorbacks started the 2005 cross country season the best way they knew how – by turning in perfect team score (15) at their own Arkansas Invitational. Eight UA runners comprised the top 10 finishers, while Missouri Southern was second with 50 points.
“It was a good meet for us, but it was faster than I wanted it to be up front,” Arkansas head coach John McDonnell said. “We had a lot of guys that looked good, but we held a few upperclassmen out. When we get the whole team together it will be even better. The chemistry seems really good with this team and that’s encouraging.”
Sophomore Shawn Forrest and senior All-American Josphat Boit crossed the line in a tie to take top honors. They held a sizable lead for most of the race and both registered times of 19:21 on the four-mile course.
“The race felt good,” Boit said. “We took it as a team, so we had a nice pace. We didn’t want to run too fast. We’ll be ready as a team for the rest of the season.”
Junior Seth Summerside was next in third place in his cross country debut. He turned in a clocking of 19:54. Sophomore Tyler Hill recorded a time of 20:03 for fourth place, greatly improving on his 20:21 performance from last year.
Senior Josh Robles was the final UA scorer in sixth place (20:19). Sophomore Jonathan Norris and senior Jose Campos were next as they came in seventh (20:32) and eighth (20:34), respectively. Norris also bettered his 20:39 time from 2004.
Last year’s meet winner, senior Luis Bordes, came in ninth with a time of 20:34. Junior Brian Roe, normally a middle distance runner, rounded out the Razorback harriers in 11th (21:06).
The Missouri Southern Invitational is next on the schedule for Arkansas. The Hogs will travel to Joplin, Mo., for the 8K race on Sept. 17, before they head to New York on Sept. 24, for the Iona College Meet of Champions.
