TULSA, Okla. – Arkansas’ doubles team of senior Imraan Ismail and junior Matt Roberts continued its march through the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Region V Championships by winning the doubles title on Monday. Junior Rohan Gajjar knocked off teammate Adrians Zguns to reach the singles final before losing to Oklahoma’s Marek Velicka in the championship match. Ismail and Roberts reached the championship match with an 8-5 win over Achim Roth and Aleksander Charpantidis of Tulsa. In the finals, Roberts and Ismail faced match point seven times before rallying back and winning the title in a tiebreaker, 9-8 over Boris Kuharic and Felipe Diaz of Oklahoma State. “They were very solid,” head coach Robert Cox said. “Anytime you’re down that many points and come back to win, you’re doing something right.” Ismail and Roberts improved to 8-1 on the year with the five wins over the weekend. They reached the semifinals with an 8-3 win over Drake’s Daliboe Pavic and Chris Lueth; a 9-7 decision over Tulsa’s Federico Soriano and Ricardo Soriano; and an 8-1 victory over Southwest Missouri’s Pavel Hanek and Jiri Spousta. Gajjar and Zguns advanced to face each other in the semifinals. Gajjar beat Diego Camacho of Tulsa, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, while Zguns downed Federico Soriano of Tulsa, 6-4, 7-5. In the semifinals, Gajjar, ranked No. 116 in the nation, rallied past Zguns, who is ranked No. 9 in the country, 2-6, 6-3, 6-1. Gajjar lost to title to Velicka, 6-4, 6-2. Despite the loss, Gajjar, along with Ismail and Roberts, advances to the ITA National Indoors at Ann Arbor, Mich., in November. Zguns, with his high ranking, is expected to get an at-large bid. Sophomore Matt Simpson also reached the quarterfinals in the singles draw, but was eliminated by Kuharic, 7-6, 6-2. Gajjar went 5-1 over the weekend to improve to 9-3. Zguns was 4-1. For the weekend, Arkansas had two singles players reach the semifinals, three reach the quarterfinals and four reach the round of 16. In addition, all three doubles teams won at least one match.
