FAYETTEVILLE – The University of Arkansas’ women’s tennis team is hosting the 2010 USTA/ITA Central Region Championship Thursday through Monday of this week at the Dills Indoor Stadium and the Billingsley Center.
The tournament serves as a region individual championship and also as a qualifier for the USTA/ITA National Individual Championship, which is held Nov. 4-7 at the USTA/Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York, N.Y.
"We are excited to be hosting the Central Region championship this year," head coach Michael Hegarty says. "It is one of the highlights of the fall season and we will be looking to play some of our best tennis of the fall while showcasing our amazing facilities."
Arkansas has dominated the Central Region tournament over the past four seasons with two singles champions, two singles runners-up and two doubles champions. The stellar individual play has carried over to the spring season as Arkansas has finished the past four seasons as the highest ranked team nationally from the central region.
"The Central Region seems to get better every season, and this year is no different," Hegarty says. "The better we can play at this individual tournament, the better positioned we will be to have a strong spring team season. It has been a great springboard for our past teams."
Along with the Razorbacks, who finished the 2010 season ranked No. 22 in the nation after advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, six other teams which finished with national rankings are participating this week. Iowa was No. 28, Tulsa was No. 32, Nebraska No. 35, Oklahoma No. 42, Oklahoma State No. 62 and Minnesota No. 74.
Play begins at 8:30 a.m. each morning and admission is free. Draws and results will be posted on ArkansasRazorbacks.com, on the women’s tennis page.
