FAYETTEVILLE – On the heels of her victory at the season-opening Arkansas Invitational, Jessica Jackson, a member of the University of Arkansas women’s cross country team, has been named the Southeastern Conference Co-Freshman of the Week.
"Jessica did a very nice job in her debut race," head coach Lance Harter said. "It was a very controlled and steady effort for her. It’s always nice to be recognized by the conference for a performance, especially a win. We look forward to big things from her this season."
Making her collegiate debut, Jackson navigated the 4K course at Agri Park in a winning time of 14:05.5, nearly five seconds ahead of the second-place runner. She helped Arkansas to a perfect team score of 15 points and a dual win over Missouri Southern. Jackson paced the Razorbacks which took the top six spots and placed all 10 runners inside the top 13.
The Neosho, Mo., native was part of an impressive debut by Arkansas’ freshmen. Jackson and fellow freshman Dominique Scott finished first and second, respectively. Overall, six Razorback freshmen-Jackson, Scott, Michaela Bauer, Shannon Klenke, Samantha Thompson and Courtney Falco-finished in the top 12 of the race.
Jackson shares this week’s freshman honors with Grace VanDeGrift of Florida. The Razorbacks are off this week but return to the course Sept. 17 for the MSSU Stampede in Joplin, Mo.
