AUSTIN, Texas – Razorback Oskar Johansson advanced Thursday morning to the round of 32 in the ITA All-American in Austin, Texas.
Ranked 35th by the International Tennis Association, Johansson defeated Frank Moser of Virginia Commonwealth 6-0, 2-6, 6-3. Moser is ranked 92nd by the ITA.
“Oskar had a breakthrough in the middle of the second set,” assistant coach Justin McGrath said. “He kept trying to go for the big shot more and became more aggressive. He played with no fear and ended up winning the match.”
Johansson is coming off his first collegiate tournament victory at the Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. He has a 9-2 record in the fall.
The ITA All-American is the second leg of the ITA Grand Slam and consists of a 64-player singles and 32-team doubles main draw. The main draw of the tournament is highlighted by 15 players who appear in the ITA Preseason Top 20.
“This was a very big win for him,” McGrath said. Johansson will play sixth-seeded Bryan Vahaly of Virginia, Friday at 8:30 a.m. Vahaly is ranked ninth by the ITA.
