TEMPE, Ariz. – Arkansas junior Oskar Johansson advanced to the final round of the Arizona State Thunderbirds Invitational Friday, after play in the quarterfinals and semifinals this afternoon.
In the quarterfinal round, Johansson defeated Rene Combette of Mississippi State 6-1, 7-6 (5). This was his third-consecutive straight-set win.
In the semifinals, Johansson faced another Southeastern Conference opponent in Vikrant Chada of Mississippi. Johansson was flawless winning 6-1, 6-4.
This is the first time that Johansson has advanced to the final round of a tournament. Ranked 35th-nationally, Johansson will play in the championship round Saturday, at 12 p.m.
Henrik Tofft battled the No. 3 seeded Stephen Huss in the quarterfinal round. Huss defeated Tofft 7-6, 6-4 in the match.
“I was really proud of the way that Henrik played,” head coach Robert Cox said. “This was an opportunity for him to see how well he can play, and I think that he will learn from this experience.”
