LAFAYETTE, La. – University of Arkansas softball team (3-2) closed out the final game of the 25th Louisiana Classic with an 8-0 win over Rhode Island on Sunday, Feb. 13.
The Razorbacks were able to defeat Rhode Island (0-5) courtesy of a walk-off single from freshman Chloe Oprzedek. The Razorbacks lit up the board by plating four runs in the third inning behind two RBI singles from Becca Carden and Jennifer Rambo, putting the Hogs to a 4-0 lead. Arkansas added to their lead thanks to a two-run homer over the left field wall from Brittany Griffiths, to make the score 6-0 going into the fifth inning.
"Kim Jones dominated today," head coach Mike Larabee said. "She really got out in front of a lot of batters and helped us get this one."
The bottom of the fifth brought Stephanie Brewer to first base on a walk, and then Jayme Gee hit a double to left center to bring in Brewer and advance the Razorbacks lead. Next at the plate, Oprzedek hit a double to right field, allowing Gee to round the bases to secure Arkansas’ third win of the tournament and the 2011 season.
"We have a little bit of work to do in the field next weekend, but I’m very proud of the girls today. Mort, Breault and Griffiths had a really good weekend for us and I’m really proud of them."
Kim Jones (1-1) had 12 strikeouts through five innings to solidify the Razorbacks a win and earn her first win of the season.
The Razorbacks continue on the road at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas, Nev., Feb. 18-20.
