Lady'Back Softball Starts 2006 Season

FAYETTEVILLE-The University of Arkansas softball team began its 10th season, Monday, Jan. 16, with a two-session practice.

The Lady Razorbacks are preparing for the 2006 season opener, Feb. 10. Arkansas is scheduled to meet Georgia, Iowa, North Carolina and tournament host, Florida International in the Diamond Fun and Sun Classic in Miami, Fla.

Arkansas softball head coach Jamie Pinkerton said he was pleased with the Lady’Backs conditioning after the winter break.

“I thought we’re miles ahead of where we were at this time last year,” he said. “I was real pleased with that.”

Seniors Shana Easley, Blaire Perry, Mindy O’Malley and Barbara-Jean Southmayd lead the 11 members returning from an improved 2005 squad while 10 newcomers including two junior college transfers round out the roster.

Pinkerton said he expects good things from the 2006 team after the Lady’Backs met their goals in the off-season.

“With the work ethic and academic standards that the team set in the fall, this team has raised the bar on their own,” he said. “This team will be much improved.”

The Lady’Backs home opener is Feb. 24 as Arkansas host Drake, Missouri-Kansas City, Missouri State, North Dakota State and Penn State in the Lady’Back Invitational.
