Lady'Backs battle higher scores

Jump to agate FAYETTEVILLE – The 16th-ranked University of Arkansas women’s golf team hung on to a tie for sixth place after higher scores in the second round of the SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla., Saturday. Arkansas is tied with sixth-ranked Georgia at 615 after shooting a 312 Saturday. “Scores were higher today,” said head coach Kelley Hester, “but they were higher for everyone. We slipped a couple spots and are disappointed with today’s scores but I still feel like we have some good golf left in us to finish this tournament.” Arkansas battled not only a tough University of Florida Golf Course but also a talented 18-team field. The Lady’Backs trail 18-ranked Wake Forest who leads the event at 591 (294-297). Third-ranked Auburn is second with a 597 (304-293) followed by No. 12 Ohio State with 600 (298-304). Top-ranked Duke is fourth with a tow-day 602 (298-304), followed by No. 15 Florida in fifth place with a 607 (300-307). Georgia and Arkansas are tied for sixth overall with rounds of 615 two strokes ahead of No. 31 Purdue who checked in with a 617 (307-310). Southeastern Conference foe South Carolina is ninth followed by No. 11 Tulane in the field. Purdue’s Myrte Eikenaar and Wake Forest’s Christine Hallstrom are tied for the lead at 145 after two rounds. The Lady Razorbacks, along with the rest of the field, battled higher scores Saturday but hung on to their overall position pretty well. Freshman Stacy Lewis leads the Lady’Backs and is tied for 13th overall at 150 (75-75). Juniors Courtney Mahon (76-76) and Amanda McCurdy (74-78) are tied for 20th overall with 152. Junior Sarah Trew and senior Gena Johnson both carded 13-over 83’s Saturday while junior Courtney Mahon counted a plus-six 76 on the second day.SunTrust Lady Gator InvitationalGainesville, Fla.
